St. Joseph, the worker Parish was bifurcated from the Holy Family Parish, Parvathipuram on 22nd November,1997. In
the initial days of its establishment as the Parish, the priest celebrated Mass in the St. Joseph’s Convent chapel
situated opposite to the Complex. As attendance increased, things became very cramped in that small space. In 2003
during the tenure of Fr. Bhogi Balapushparaj, after an extraordinary effort and wonderful generosity of the
Diocese and faithul, the current church was built and consecrated on 01-05-2007 by Most Rev. A. Innayya, the
first Bishop of Srikakulam, His Grace Most Rev. K. Mariadas, Archbishop of Visakhapatnam and Most Rev. John

Shanthinagar (Deppiguda) is situated in Urudi Gram Panchayat, Mondemkhallu, Kuruppam Mandal, Vizianagram
Dt, AP. The Shanthinagar parish came into existence around 1985 in the Archdiocese of Vishakhapatnam
and now in Srikakulam Diocese. Around 1985, the Diocese of Vishakhapatnam took up this savara area as
its mission and established Shanthinagar as an independent parish (in 1986). The seed of evangelization
in the area was sown by Fr. Joseph Mulan of Vincentian Congregation (CM) worked hard in the area and
brought many people to Catholic faith.
This is one of the biggest mission stations which has more than 100 villages. The people speak tribal
language called savara. 'Savara' villages usually are hamlets, consisting very few members in a
family. The mission of Montfort Fathers is to uplift these innocent illiterate people. It is total
welfare to the people. K.D. Jola parish holds 44 villages.

The Kothuru Parish has long history. Kothuru and its substations were looked after by Parlakhimundi
Mission - Fr. Emmanuel. He used to come all the way from Parlakhimundi to Kothuru to celebrate
Holy Mass.
In the year 1959 (probably) due to the increasing Catholic population and distance to come to Kothuru
area, the need is felt for the formation of a new parish. Hence the Kothuru parish was made in 1959.
The first Parish Priest was Rev. Fr. John, msfs.
From 1972 with the arrival of Bro. Joseph Puthuru, msfs, medical assistance was extended to the people
of this area. Brother built a small dispensary in the place opposite to the parish (now it is
given to Cluny Sisters). This apostolate really paved a way to get many more to embrace the faith.
In 1975 to 1985 Fr. Anthony Parayil kept up the living faith among the catholics. It is a long stay
and had contacts with all the families. Holy Cross Parish was an extraordinarily vibrant community
during the time of Fr. Varghese Kollamprampil. He realized the dream of building a church large
enough to accommodate the growing community. The new church was dedicated to Exultation of the
Holy Cross. The following are the substation of the parish: Irapaduguda, Nivagam, Gudiapadu,

The history of Pathapatnam traces back to the year 1942. Pathapatnam remained with Parlakhimundi
till 1993. With the bifurcation of the diocese, due to geographical problems of both Andhra
Pradesh and Odissa, Pathapatnam was taken by the Diocese. The parish house was built with a
special room for liturgical services by Fr. Jacob Pathupallil. The shrine at Rompi Lakshmipuram
was started by Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Tharapel, msfs. Till 1995 Msfs priests were the Parish Priests.
Pathapatnem, Tekkalipatnam, Bathili, Kasinagar and Kothuru were the part of Parlakhemundi mission.

Parvathipuram made independent mission from Palakonda and grew into large parish covering vast
distance. Its importance also to note that due to two high schools and boarding homes, the mission
spread. By the time of bifurcation it was one of the largest parishes in the diocese. Missionaries
both from France and Kerala worked relentlessly to develop this parish and indeed it grew from
strength to strength by having 32 outstations. In 1993, bifurcation of the diocese took place
and Parvathipuram parish became part of Srikakulam diocese. Today it is a vibrant and devaout
parish among all parishes of the diocese of Srikakulam. The following are the substations of
the parish.. Church street, Indira Colony, John the Baptist Street, Kothavalasa, Markandaputti,
Kothabantuvanivalasa, Gopalapuram, LN Puram, Dalaipeta, Krishna Palli and Parasurampuram.

Rajam parish was part of Bobbili mission. Though it is close to Palakonda, due to Nagavali River
having no bridge for a long time, travelling between Rajam and Palakonda became very difficult.
So fathers travelled round about from Bobbili via Rambhadrapuram. From Rajam, Uttaravalli,
Badangi and Koduru shrine were formed in the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam. When the new diocese
came about, Rajam became part of the new diocese of Srikakulam. In 1993 While the Parish is
in the mother diocese, the new church was built and blessed by both Bishops. At the time of
bifurcation of the diocese, Rajam became a prosperous mission with 29 outstations and a U.P.
School and Hospital. FROM THE PARISH OF RAJAM, SANKILI AND GANGADA WERE MADE AS NEW PARISHES.

Many years ago Rev. Fr. Mulan from Odissa and Rev. Fr. Varghese Elanjipuram from Bathili visited all
the tribal villages of this area. It took so many years for them to bring the tribal people into
the Catholic faith.
Fr. Mulan spent so quite number of years with tribal people and started learning their language - Savara.
He wrote Bible in Savara Language. He is the first priest who translated Bible into their language.
When he was not able to move about, he entrusted this mission to the Diocese. Levidi Parish took
care of these villages till 2014 before it was announed as a separate parish. The parish headquarters
is SAVARA KOTAPADU (S.K. PADU).

Fr. Mathew Nadackal, msfs was the pioneer to initiate the mission at Tekkali. From 1985 he was
visiting Devalabadra (Jerribadra) in order to start a mission. He was regular in visiting this
village and few families were converted. In 1990, Mr. Isaac Nadackal started Infant Jesus English
Medium School. He was kind enough to set apart a room only for Sunday Mass, Fr. Mathew Nadackal
without fail used to come to Takkali and local few catholics started to attend the Mass. Due to
the old age and sickness, Fr Mathew Nadackal was taken back to the Provincialate for rest.
Till 1998, Fr. K.T. Mathew, Fr. George Nellikunnel from Palasa continued to visit Tekkali once in
fortnight for Holy Mass. From 1998 onwards the Tekkali was taken care by the Bishop’s House. The
Procurator come every Sunday and purchased the land for the Diocese. Now the diocese has school,
parish house and parish church for all the activities.

Tekkalipatnam Mission was under the Mission of Parlakhimundi. In 1983 MSFS priests took up this
mission. The pioneers established the parish, school and boarding, and purchased two bits of land
in Dasupuram and Kamalapuram total of 13.50 acres for the maintenance of the mission. After the
erection of the diocese, according to the agreement, the mission of Tekkalipatnam was given to
the Diocese by then the Provincial Fr. Mani Panthalani, msfs in 1997 and promised to keep their
priest for two years. The first Parish Priest was Rev. Fr. P. Karunakumar, msfs. Since the
residence of the priests was in dilapidated condition, a new parish House was constructed. During
his time, the Franciscan Sisters of Sacred Heart were invited to work in the school and the
Boarding Home. A piece of land was given to the sisters for the construction of their convent
and then the parish Church was built. The priests who worked afterwards built the girls' and the
boys' boardings.

The history of Town Hall parish goes back to 1892. Rev. Fr. Francois Sage purchased land from Town
Hall Club. Fr. P. Vittoz was the first resident at Srikakulam (possibly) in 1906-1907. Until this
time priests from both Parlakhimundi and Palakonda seem to have been visiting Srikakulam and for
certain, from 1907 Palakonda began to look after it. During 1921-1928 no one visited Srikakulam.
In 1930 Fr. Joseph Quibler was appointed to look after Srikakulam.
Later not much known about the mission. In 1960’s Fr. Mani Tharappel used to visit from Parlkhimundi.
He had a good catholic by name Vasudevarao at Sunnapu Veedhi opposite to Relli veedhi. He used
celebrated Holy Mass in their house. In 1958 Fr. Parel Thomas was first chaplain to celebrate
Masses to St. Joseph’s Sisters. One Mr. MS Rao was helping poor people to buy Rickshaw. He
made the shed for the sake of keeping rickshaws where now we see the Town parish. Fr.
Varghese Onayanthukuzhy 1972, Fr. Thomas Parel extended this mission to Siddipeta, Adivarampeta,
Bairavanipeta and Kalingapatnam. An old student of Bishop J. Baud – Raja of Vijanagaram sold 24
acres of land for Rs.500/- in Balagathope –(present Bishop’s House campus). This time one
nurse by name Marcelamma was guarding the land at Ranastalam which was bought by Fr. Varghese.
Pedayamalapeta, costa, villages came to faith during this time.
In 1986 the Mother Teresa sisters were living with their activities in Town Parish. After the formation
of the diocese, the Mother Teresa Sisters shifted to Konna Street. The was given by the diocese.

In order to minister the spiritual needs of the Catholic Community in Vangara area and as this mandal
is located corner of the district, the diocese made Vangara as a separate Parish in 1994 after the
erection of the diocese. Early records reveal that good number of villages are attached to Vangara.
The Parish is named after St. Paul. The first parish priest is Rev. Fr. George Edappady. During
his time of service Catholic Community in Vangara assumed a more definite form. He started with
the permission of Bishop a small boarding home for poor children of the area. He lived in a
simple shed and started the construction the parish house. Later during the tenure of other
parish priests, planned to build a Church, boarding homes and School.
